Introducing One Young World Nigeria (OYWON)

Thursday, August 18, 2011

One Young World Nigeria (OYWON) is an initiative of Nigerian delegates that attended the One Young World global summit in February 2010. Promoted by young, intelligent and forward thinking individuals who wish to commit a portion of their very busy lives to addressing some of the critical issues faced by Nigeria’s present generation, the group’s focus is addressing social injustice by redefining erstwhile existing social patterns.

Adopt a Library Project
In promoting the idea of “less talk and more action” the group will be kicking off with the “Adopt a Library Project” which focuses on rehabilitating dilapidated libraries in public secondary schools. Activities for the project can be grouped into 3 key phases: collection of books and sourcing for other resource materials i.e. chairs, tables and shelves; refurbishment of the libraries; and lastly, facilitation of “adoption” of refurbished libraries by private institutions/individuals. It is the groups’ hope that the project would eventually realize the following objectives:
·       Re-introduce a reading culture amongst youths in Nigeria
·       Support poverty alleviation through donations of reference materials to under-stocked libraries
·       Support upgrade of the educational system in Nigeria
·       Set an example to Nigerians on using simple measures to solve complex issues
·       Re-orientate Nigerians to be accountable for the dilapidating educational system
·       Support the governments initiative for public-private partnership
·       Awaken consciousness amongst youths to “talk less and do more”
·       Engage EVERYONE on future OYWON projects

Ilado Community Secondary School has been selected as a pilot for the project after which other public secondary schools would be enjoined on the platform. In addition, with access to sufficient reading materials and a conducive study environment, the group aspires to foster educational activities that would promote a drive for cultivating a culture for knowledge amongst Nigerian students.
The Ilado Community College "Adopt a library project" is set to take place on the 20th of August 2011.

  2. I wish there was a way I can ship some of my books over there. I have so many books that it is not even funny. I wish shipping was cheaper and reliable once it enters Nigeria.
